Internet users in Nigeria will have a new experience with the entry of jangola.com into the Nigerian internet industry. An indigenous online medium designed to give internet users a hub that provides news, social networking, forum, photo gallery, video sharing and other user friendly features that will make web surfing a lively experience.

Benedict Odulana, country manager of jangola.com, explains that the reason for establishing jangola.com was borne out of the necessity to give Nigerians at home and abroad something of their own, which at the same time will give them easy access to local information and an interactive platform.

jangola.com is user-oriented and thus, Citizen Journalism, a growing trend in the way news is being reported around the world is also a feature of jangola.com. Nigerians’ freedom of information and expression is enhanced on jangola.com with this feature. “Citizen Journalism has been used with reverberating effect in other countries to express people’s opinion and has made significant input in societal development,” Odulana said.

He added that “Nigerian youths are intelligent and more deft with modern information and communication technologies, therefore, it is imperative that they have a platform which identifies more with their culture and background so that they can contribute politically, socially, and culturally to the growth of their own nation, rather than relying on facebook, yahoo, twitter and others.”

The information segment on the website is replete with categories such as politics, entertainment, lifestyle, business, sports, celebrities, health, travel, and obituary. Though only three months old, the “look and feel” of the website is alluring, a plus to its rich content and easy surfing across pages on the website. Signing up on the website is also easy as users only need to register by creating a ‘username’ and ‘password’ which is unique by using their existing e-mail addresses. In addition, jangola.com can also create unique e-mail addresses which end with @jangola.com (e.g This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. )

Adekunle Binuyo, content executive of jangola.com pointed out that jangola.com was tailored with the needs and interests of youths at heart. Though he added that internet-users in their 50s and 60s, who are still very young at heart and in tune with new communication technologies, will also find it very useful. And in spite of the fact that it is an indigenous company here in Nigeria with Nigerians as its target audience, jangola.com is, nevertheless, accessible to the global audience. “Remember that the internet is a virtual geographical space without physical borders or time constraint. And the global village is much more real now than ever and can only continue to grow,” he said.

Hoping that access to the internet in Nigeria will increase if infrastructure are built and well maintained, Binuyo expects that venture capitalists in Nigeria should begin to look into how to support businesses in the area of technology.

jangola.com hopes to employ over 50 campus reporters within the next few months while plans to cooperate with tertiary institutions in Nigeria are under way.
